WHO IS AT RISK?
To some degree, everyone is at risk from heart disease. Today nearly one quarter of all Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease, which causes more men and women deaths in the U.S. than cancer and accidents combined. For some, the risk is comparatively slight, but still others may be high risk candidates even without their knowledge. For them, early identification and intervention is the key to reducing the mortality rate. And, for those not yet at risk, education is the best tool for prevention.
The best way to determine one's risk is to have a thorough examination by a physician. The Center offers complete, individual screening to determine each person's level of risk. While too little is still known about the causes of heart disease, there are some factors that are proven to increase a person's risk. They include:
♥ Smoking ♥ High blood pressure or high blood sugar ♥ Lack of exercise and being overweight ♥ High blood cholesterol or a low HDL (good) cholesterol level ♥ A personal history of heart problems ♥ A family history of heart disease ♥ Genetic factors that increase one’s risk of blood clot formation
The Center's expert staff of physicians, nurses and health educators can develop a comprehensive plan to treat these and other risk factors and reduce the risks associated with them. And for those not yet at risk, the Center offers the latest information on prevention, because the best way to beat it is before it starts.
WHERE IS THE CENTER?
The Center is located at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, in the Outpatient Care Center. We also see patients at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Preventive Cardiology Center at the Maryland Athletic Club (the MAC) just off Route 83 at the intersection of Timonium and Deerco Roads.
